Marsh-Handscomb deny India victory on Day 5 in Ranchi

Australia managed to secure a draw against India to keep the series alive as it is tied 1-1 with the last Test to be played in Dharamsala. The visitors batted their skins off on Day 5 of the match, on a pitch that did do some tricks but wasn’t unplayable to bat on.

India bowled first after losing the toss, and once again picked up Warner early in the innings. With some disciplined bowling by Umesh Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja, India managed to get the hosts to 4 for 140.

Australia didn’t allow India to capitalize and it was Steven Smith who stood tall for the visitors. He was accompanied by comeback man Glenn Maxwell who scored his first Test ton. His display of patience and resolve was unlike the Maxwell we usually see.

It was their 191 runs partnership which took Australia to 451 in the first innings. Steven Smith has got stuck into the Indian bowling lineup this series and his unbeaten 178* was just another proof of his ability. For India, it was once again Ravindra Jadeja who did a terrific job with the ball.

India started off positively with a 91-run partnership between Vijay and KL Rahul. For the hosts, their middle order woes continued with none among Kohli, Rahane, Nair or Ashwin crossing even 25 runs.

Comeback man Pat Cummins was absolutely brilliant with the ball, picking up wickets at important situations. Every delivery he bowled was with the same vigour and effort which would please the Australian team management.

Pujara who has had a terrific home season continued his form with a brilliant double hundred. India were in massive trouble when he joined forces with Wriddhiman Saha as the latter scored an important century as well.

Pujara scored his second double hundred against the Australians and also become the record holder for most balls faced in a Test innings by an Indian. His immense concentration and his ability to keep on defending the ball did get him a lot of appreciation.

Although on Day 4 he along with Saha failed to score runs quickly in the second session which meant that India had to bat a little longer to get a substantial lead. Coming down the order, Jadeja did strike a quick fire half-century as India finally declared on 603/9.

With just eight overs to play, Jadeja cleaned up Warner with a great delivery and followed it up by getting night watchman Lyon bowled as well. India finished up the day in front with odds in their favour to win the match.

With the pressure being built at the Day 4 stumps, Kohli opted to keep one seamer and one spinner combination which gave some breathing space for the visitors. R Ashwin wasn’t even given the ball for the first hour and a half, which could have been an error on Virat’s part.

Although in the skipper’s defense, Ashwin didn’t look threatening in the second innings. With the partnership between Handscomb and Smith going strong, it was Ishant and Jadeja who picked up quick wickets and brought India back in the game.

The post lunch session belonged entirely to Australians as they went wicket less thanks to a brilliant partnership between Handscomb and Shaun Marsh. The duo effectively saved the match which means that the 4th Test will be even more competitively fought as the series is still alive.
